Sharp, clear images and incredible freedom of movement
A manageable 500mm that offers a whole new shooting experience

The SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports is an ultra-telephoto lens exclusively for mirrorless cameras. It offers a focal length of 500mm and exceptional image quality, yet this lens is remarkably compact and lightweight. By incorporating several large-diameter exclusive low-dispersion glass elements, which are complex to produce, SIGMA has managed to significantly reduce the size of the lens without using diffractive optics. Furthermore, the lens achieves a very high resolving power that meets the expectations of a 500mm prime lens. The lens is mainly composed of high-precision engineering plastic parts, offering excellent build quality and weather resistance, including a dust and splash-resistant structure*, all within a compact size. With its optical power and incredibly compact size for its focal length, the SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports offers a whole new photographic experience for wildlife, aviation, sports, and any other fast-action photography.

* The structure is designed to resist dust and splashes, but not water. Be careful not to expose the lens to a large amount of water. Water inside the lens can cause significant damage and even render the lens irreparable.

Perfect for handheld shooting, a 500mm lens with unparalleled optical performance

A latest-generation optical construction using exclusive low-dispersion glass elements has enabled both an extremely compact lens construction and high optical performance with excellent aberration correction. In addition to its handheld-friendly size, high-speed autofocus with its HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) motor and its OS2 optical stabilization algorithm ensure comfortable shooting.

High optical performance and compact lens construction

The latest-generation optical design has significantly reduced the size of the optical system of this 500mm ultra-telephoto lens. By using exclusive convex low-dispersion elements at the front of the lens, it offers both excellent aberration correction capabilities and a reduced overall length. The high technological level of production at SIGMA's Aizu factory, its only production site, allows for the precision required to process exclusive low-dispersion glass elements for a large aperture. The lens provides excellent correction for all aberrations, especially axial chromatic aberration, which cannot be corrected by the camera, ensuring consistent high resolution from the center to the periphery of the image.

Excellent resistance to backlighting of the subject

The SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports uses refractive lenses in its optical construction to avoid flare and incidental light, which are characteristics of diffractive optical elements, resulting in clear images without worrying about these effects, even in backlighting or when a light source is included in the image. Indeed, based on the latest generation simulation technology, measures are taken against all incidental light conditions.

High-speed AF with an HLA linear motor

An HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) linear motor is used for AF motorization, characterized by its high displacement precision thanks to advanced electronic control, as well as its silence. The HLA motor allows for fast and precise autofocus, even for ultra-telephoto shots, such as sports and bird photography, where extremely precise focusing is necessary.

OS2 algorithm used for optical stabilization function

The latest OS2 optical stabilization algorithm offers an extremely high image stabilization effect of 5 stops*. The lens is equipped with two OS modes: Mode 1 is suitable for general shooting and Mode 2 is ideal for panning shots. In Mode 2, SIGMA's intelligent OS, an algorithm specially designed for panning shots, allows for effective image stabilization even when the camera is moved vertically or diagonally, regardless of horizontal and vertical orientation. This allows for capturing subject movements without losing the panning effect.

* Based on CIPA guidelines (measured at 70mm and 200mm with a Full-Frame image sensor)

Compact, lightweight and of excellent manufacturing quality

The lens was designed to be small and lightweight, just like its optical construction which has been significantly compacted. Not only is the lens easy to handle handheld, but it also offers the weather resistance of SIGMA's Sports line specifications and the excellent build quality that SIGMA is proud of in terms of texture and operational quality of each ring and control.

High-precision TSC* parts allow for both high performance and a compact, lightweight design.

To achieve such a compact, lightweight and robust lens, materials such as TSC and magnesium were used in appropriate places. In particular, the production of a large TSC part that functions as an internal structure, as well as an external part to reduce the size and weight of the lens, are manufactured with micron-level precision and also have an elegant finish that gives the lens its high-end appearance. The elaborate processing and production technology of the Aizu factory, SIGMA's only production facility in Japan, enables highly precise production and guarantees the high performance and durability of the lens.

* TSC (Thermally Stable Composite) is a type of polycarbonate with a thermal expansion rate similar to aluminum. It has a strong affinity with metal parts, contributing to the manufacture of high-quality products.

Weather resistance, Sports line specifications

The mount, manual focus ring, switches, and camera connection are all dust and splash resistant to prevent dust and dirt from entering the lens. In addition, the front element of the lens features a water and oil repellent coating to facilitate maintenance when water droplets or dust adhere to the lens.

Lens hood included

A lightweight, highly resistant, and exclusive TSC lens hood is included. The end of the lens hood is rubberized to protect the lens from abrasion and scratches caused by positioning the lens face down.

A multitude of functions to assist you in many shooting situations

The SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports is equipped with a full range of assistance functions, including an aperture ring and three AFL* buttons ready to be assigned to chosen functions in the camera. The L-mount version is also compatible with SIGMA teleconverters for autofocus shooting at ultra-telephoto focal lengths up to 1000mm.

* Only on compatible cameras. Available functions may vary depending on the camera used.

Full range of customizable functions

Equipped with a focus search limiter, the lens allows users to limit the operating range of the focus during autofocus when necessary, thus allowing quick and precise focusing.

In addition, the lens features three AFL* buttons ready to be assigned to chosen functions using the camera. The AFL buttons are easy to use, regardless of camera orientation, and allow quick access to important settings. For the L-Mount version, the SIGMA USB DOCK UD-11 can be used to adjust the operation of the OS stabilizer or the focus limiter range via the custom mode selector*.

The setting assigned to Sony E-mount lenses cannot be changed from the default setting as there is no USB DOCK for this mount. The default setting allows users to switch the visibility of the OS stabilization effect in the viewfinder and live view.

Equipped with an aperture ring

In addition to an aperture ring, the lens is also equipped with an aperture ring switch and an aperture ring lock switch, allowing the aperture to be adapted to each use.

Removable tripod collar foot

The lightweight and robust magnesium alloy tripod collar foot is compatible with the Arca-Swiss standard. The removable foot is attached to a ring that clicks at 90° intervals.

* The TS-151 tripod collar foot is compatible with the SIGMA 70-200mm F2.8 DG DN OS | Sports.

Teleconverter for L-Mount (1.4x / 2.0x)

The L-Mount version of the lens is compatible with SIGMA TELE CONVERTER TC-1411 (1.4x) and TC-2011 (2.0x) teleconverters. By using a teleconverter, the focal length can be multiplied by 1.4 and even by 2, allowing you to shoot with autofocus at ultra-telephoto focal lengths up to 1000mm.
